Chiasson Recognized on Insurance Dream Team
For the second year in a row, NAILBA’s Executive Director Jack Chiasson has been recognized by Insurance Broadcasting, in conjunction with the Insurance Media Association, on its seventh annual list of the 100 most powerful people in the insurance industry for North America (also referred to as the Insurance Dream Team).
In their announcement of the list, Insurance Broadcasting stresses that the list recognizes individuals, not organizations and only those individuals whose accomplishments are current. Specifically, “this is not a list of CEOs,” nor does it recognize for past achievement, longevity, or who is on the fast track to the top.

NAILBA Membership Renewals: Return before March 31!
Membership renewal packets have been mailed to all NAILBA member agency principals. Each company must complete the renewal paperwork annually to confirm eligibility for membership in NAILBA. Renewals returned after March 31, 2011 may incur a late fee.
Your renewal packet also includes a printout of your database listing, for your edits. Please be sure to return the edited database listing along with your completed renewal application* and dues payment* at your earliest convenience.

President Obama Hints at Cutting Tax Expenditures in State of the Union Speech
President Obama addressed a joint session of Congress in his annual State of the Union on Tuesday, January 25. During his speech, the President proposed to “cut excessive spending…through tax breaks and loopholes.” NAILBA interprets the President’s remarks to mean he will support cutting tax expenditures as a means to raise revenue.
Key Republicans such as House Budget Committee Chairman Rep. Paul Ryan (R-WI) have likewise stated their desire to cut tax expenditures, increasing the possibility for bipartisan support over such a policy. Tax expenditures such as tax-free inside buildup on life insurance and deferred annuities could be considered for elimination.
Congress is expected to discuss the future of tax expenditures when the FY2012 budget debate begins this coming spring.
SEC Recommends Uniform Standard of Care for Brokers
Last weekend, the Securities and Exchange Commission submitted the findings of its study of the standards of care used by brokers, dealers and investment advisors in providing investment advice to retail clients. The study was mandated by Section 913 of the Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act of 2010.
SEC staff recommends that the Commission consider "rulemakings that would apply expressly and uniformly to both broker-dealers and investment advisers...a fiduciary standard no less stringent than currently applied to investment advisers."
The study and recommendations were authored by SEC staff and do not carry the weight of law. The five SEC Commissioners still need to vote on a final rule, which may or may not reflect the recommendations made by the standards of care study.
SEC Commissioners Troy Paredes and Kathleen Casey issued a joint statement opposing the study's conclusions and expressing concern about the study's shortcomings.
No timeline has been set for the implementation of a rule. NAILBA government affairs staff expects any rulemaking to be an extensive process and we will continue to work with our industry partners on this critical issue.

Storytelling is one of the best ways we can educate the American public about insurance, and the LIFE Foundation’s realLIFEstories program does just that. The LIFE Foundation solicits and promotes true stories that illustrate how smart insurance planning saved the day for individuals, families and businesses at their time of greatest need. The LIFE Foundation is now accepting realLIFEstories entries, and invites the assistance of NAILBA members and the brokerage community in promoting the program to your agents and advisors.
This year’s deadline to submit an entry is February 28, 2011. The earlier deadline is a result of a change in magazine partners, to Parents and O magazines. Please join the LIFE Foundation in promoting this program and the earlier deadline.

NAILBA 30 Exhibit Booth Sales
The deadline for priority placement on exhibit sales was Friday, December 17. If your company is a current exhibitor, and you have not submitted your NAILBA 30 contract and deposit, please do so immediately. Effective now, exhibit space at NAILBA 30 will be sold on a first-contracted, first-sold basis without regard to previous exhibiting history.

Abuse of the Attendee Email List
All exhibitors and sponsors from NAILBA 29 were contacted in January concerning an increase in the frequency of abuse of the attendee email list. As you know, this list is offered as a benefit to contracted exhibitors and sponsors for one outreach before and one outreach after the meeting.
The one-use policy is designed to provide you, the exhibitor/sponsor, with exposure to all attendees; conversely, it provides attendees with exposure to each exhibitor, but on a controlled scale. In addition, recent email traffic indicates that current exhibitors and sponsors are sharing the list with non-contracted exhibitors and sponsors. This de-values the exhibiting experience for all contracted exhibitors and sponsors, and most especially for attendees who are being contacted by individuals who are not committed to supporting the event.
Please be advised that continued abuse of the list may result in an organizational decision by NAILBA not to provide the list, except for purchase (for an additional fee) by contracted exhibitors and sponsors.
